Khuchma’s guard appeared on US TV

Television channel CBS issued a 15-minute-long theme dedicated to the “cassette scandal” in Ukraine. The central moment of the program was an interview with the former member of state security Nikolai Melnichenko.

Melnichenko told, for instance, about the motives that prompted him to lay a recording device in the room of the president of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma and expressed a conviction that Ukrainian president is implicated in the disappearance of journalist Georgi Gongadze.  Also, the TV theme included fragments of an interview with President Kuchma and one of the leaders of the “National Salvation Forum”, Taras Chernovol.

The author of the program does not draw any conclusions, commenting that it is difficult to prove the authenticity of Melnichenko’s records.  At the same time, it was observed that the events in Ukraine at the present moment are not developing in favor of US since this political scandal impelled Kuchma to seek the support of the Russian president Vladimir Putin.  This could lead to re-orientation of Ukraine’s course of political and economic development to Russia.

As stated earlier, the former officer of security of the president of Ukraine, Nikolai Melnichenko, asserts that he made tape records confirming the involvement of President Leonid Kuchma in putting pressure on politicians and journalists and in the disappearance of journalist Georgi Gongadze.  Recently, Melnichenko received political asylum in USA.
