Speaker
of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Genadi Seleznev does not exclude a
possibility of joining Nagorni Karabakh to the Union of Russia and Belorussia (URB)
as part of Armenia, Armenian sources report.
In an interview to a correspondent of CNA Seleznev remarked that
representatives of Armenia, who come on a regular basis as observers, attended
the last session of URB. When
talking about Karabakh settlement the chairman of State Duma of Russian
Federation remarked that Minsk group of OSCE is working on that problem and
that, in his opinion, it has not yet fully realized its possibilities. When
touching the issue of intercommunication between the Russian Federation and
Armenia, he remarked that all known political forces in Russia speak in support
of trengthening friendly relations
between Armenia and Russia.
Parliaments
of both countries bring in considerable contributions in building a legal base
for development and deepening of co-operation between Armenia and Russia, Genadi
Seleznev stated. State Duma of the
Russian Federation had ratified a number of important documents concerning
bi-lateral co-operation in geopolitical, trade-economical and military-technique
spheres from the beginning of this year, he remarked. President of Armenia
Robert Kocharyan, who is in Brussels on an official visit, declared that it is
impossible to return to the status Nagorni Karabakh had before 1988, the
beginning of Armenian-Azerbaidjan armed conflict. He considers that a “juridical definition” of the formed
status-quote must be found in the process of Karabakh settlement.
Nagorni Karabakh is de-facto independent and fully formed state, where a
generation that does not imagine a possibility of subordination to Azerbaidjan
has grown up. Despite that, in the opinion of Robert Kocharyan, Russian military
bases in Armenia must be conserved. “In
the conditions of complicated geopolitical situation a Russian military base in
Armenia plays a stabilizing role in the region,” he stated in Brussels.
“Military bases of USA are located in Turke; however, nobody talks
about inferiority of independence of the Turkish state," Robert Kocharyan
remarked. According to his words,
the fact of presence of Russian military bases in Armenia is also conditioned by
the tension in Armenian-Turkish relations.
"Russian military base allows the nation of Armenia to feel more
secure," he said.
