‘Geological Resources and History: Rocks and Dinosaurs’
The International Commission on the History of Geological Sciences (INHIGEO)
is organising a meeting in Portugal in 2001. The three themes will
be:
1. The use of stone through the ages
2. Dinosaurs and other megafauna in the history of geology
3. History of mining, metallurgy, and economic geology.
(These topics have been selected to link with the particular matters of
interest that are available in the context of the history of geological
sciences in Portugal.)
The meeting will involve oral and poster presentations, field
excursions related to the conference themes, three talks by distinguished
guest speakers, and a round-table discussion on ‘Why study the history
of the geosciences?’. The conference will take place partly in Lisbon
and partly in Aveiro, with visits to other towns such as Coimbra and Porto.
The provisional cost estimate is US$375 for accommodation and
$100 for conference fee. Food will be additional.
Offers of papers are requested by the Conference President, Professor
Manuel Pinto, by October 31, 2000, and abstracts should be submitted to
him by January 1, 2001.
The conference languages will be English and French.

"Dolomieu en son temps - Naissance de la science moderne", Paris, november
14, 2001
Le Comité français d'Histoire de la Géologie et la
Société géologique de France organiseront conjointement
le mercredi 14 novembre 2001 un colloque sur le thème "Dolomieu
en son temps - Naissance de la science moderne". Cette réunion destinée
à célébrer le bicentenaire de la mort de Dolomieu
(1750-1801) permettra également au Comité français
d'Histoire de la Géologie, fondé par François Ellenberger
en juin 1976, de fêter son premier quart de siècle.
Ce colloque sera l'occasion de faire le point sur les divers aspects
de l'œuvre de Dolomieu : exploration géologique, minéralogie,
pétrologie, volcanologie etc. Il sera également possible
d'y évoquer certains de ses contemporains qui contribuèrent
comme lui au mouvement des idées pendant le dernier quart du XVIIIe
siècle : Buffon, Guettard, Giraud-Soulavie, Desmarest, Faujas de
Saint-Fond, Delamétherie, Romé de l'Isle, Haüy, de Luc,
Saussure, Hutton, Werner, Arduino, Bergman, etc.
Afin de faciliter la coordination de ce colloque, il est conseillé
aux personnes désireuses d'y présenter une communication
d'en informer sans attendre les organisateurs en indiquant le thème
qu'ils souhaitent traiter.
