Your Android phone receives regular updates, but some go unnoticed. Between AI-related additions, network protections, and changes in Google applications, the start of 2026 marks a significant turning point for the Android ecosystem. Here are the new features that truly change daily usage.

Android 17 and AI Agent Control on Your Phone

Have you ever noticed that an app seemed to act on its own in the background? With Android 17, Google provides a direct answer to this ambiguity. A new section called “Agents” appears in the security and privacy settings, under “Privacy Controls.”

This section lists the AI agents (Gemini or third-party apps) that can access your data or trigger actions in other applications. Each permission becomes visible and revocable from a single place.

Google also adds a visual indicator named Android Halo: a sparkling star appears on the screen whenever an AI agent acts in the background. The idea is simple: you know at all times if an artificial intelligence is working for you, and on what. Keeping track of these developments over the weeks becomes easier thanks to specialized media like Android Inside, which detail each update as soon as it becomes available.

Encrypted Client Hello: Network Privacy that Android Activates by Default

Mobile privacy protection goes beyond app permissions. A large part of the data leaks at the network level, even before the content of a page is loaded.

Android 17 activates the Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) standard in the TLS protocol by default. In practice, the name of the contacted site or application is encrypted right from the start of the connection. Your internet service provider, a public Wi-Fi operator, or a network analysis tool can no longer easily see which services you are using.

Combined with the private DNS already available on Android, ECH fills a gap that web browsers had already partially corrected, but which the mobile system left open. Android 17 is the first major mobile system to enable ECH by default for applications targeting this version.

What This Changes for the User

On a hotel or train station Wi-Fi network, browsing data was partially exposed even with HTTPS. With ECH, this exposure significantly decreases. No action is required on your part: the protection is applied automatically.

New Google Features on Android: Multi-App Bubbles and On-Screen Reactions

Updates are not just coming from the system. Google is also rolling out new features directly in its applications and services.

Bubbles Are No Longer Limited to Messaging Apps

Until now, floating bubbles on Android were mainly used for conversations (Messages, WhatsApp). With Android 17, bubbles are now available for all applications. You can keep more than two apps open simultaneously and switch from one to another without returning to the home screen.

On foldable devices, a new bubble bar appears to take advantage of the expanded screen. Multitasking becomes smoother, especially for those who are checking a map while replying to a message or taking notes.

On-Screen Reactions While Recording

Google adds a screen recording feature that captures the front camera at the same time. You can react in video to an article, a comment, or content while the screen is being filmed. This feature is debuting on Pixel devices.

Android Applications: What Changes in Security and Compatibility

Beyond visible features, several changes affect how applications function on the Play Store and on your device.

  • Call Scam Detection: Google is gradually expanding this feature to smartphones from other manufacturers, beyond just Pixel. The system analyzes suspicious calls in real-time using an embedded AI model, without sending data to the cloud.
  • A switch to disable 2G is now integrated into the system, blocking attacks from fake cell towers (IMSI catchers) used to intercept SMS or locate a phone.
  • Android emulators and some older applications must now target at least API 36 to remain available on the Google Play Store, pushing developers to adopt the latest security standards.

These adjustments may not make headlines, but they significantly reduce the risks associated with fraudulent calls, network interception, and outdated applications.

Samsung One UI 9 and AI Additions of the Galaxy S26

Samsung is keeping pace with the One UI 9 beta, tested on the Galaxy S26. This version includes new AI features specific to the Samsung overlay, complementing those provided by Android 17.

Updates include photo editing assistance, improved voice transcription, and contextual suggestions in the interface. Samsung is gradually aligning One UI with the capabilities of Gemini while retaining its own tools (Bixby, Samsung Notes AI).

Why follow this beta? Because the features tested today on the S26 generally arrive on older models in the following months. Observing what comes out in beta gives a good idea of what will be available on your own Galaxy device by the end of the year.

The start of 2026 on Android boils down to three concrete axes: transparency about AI activity, strengthening network privacy with ECH, and opening multitasking to all applications. Security updates, less spectacular, fix vulnerabilities that most users are unaware of. Enabling automatic updates remains the most effective gesture to benefit from them without thinking about it.
